ANTHRAX OUTBREAK: KALOMO BUTCHERIES, ABATTOIRS CLOSED, LIVESTOCK MOVEMENT BANNED
ANTHRAX disease has broken out in Kalomo District, prompting the Veterinary Department to impose a livestock movement ban and closing all Butcheries and the Local Abattoir with immediate effect.
Kalomo Veterinary Officer, Dr. Anabo Maambo, notes that the actions taken are in line with the Animal Health Act Number 27 of 2010 pertaining to Animal Disease Control.
He says positive results were recorded from samples taken from cattle stocks which were dying under unknown circumstances in the Kanchele Block last week.
Maambo states that all butcheries and the local abattoir will remain closed while measures to contain the disease are being put in place to control the outbreak.
He says as an interim measure, Government is to supply 100,000 doses to Kalomo to combat the disease, with the district currently having a livestock population of over 200,000.
Maambo has advised farmers to adhere to the Veterinary Control measures during the outbreak, with the Anthrax Control Team expected to swing into action by Thursday.
And Kalomo District Commissioner, Joshua Sikaduli, has confirmed the few cases that have been traced in some ranches in Nkala Area.
Sikaduli states that a team has already been dispatched to determine the extent of the Anthrax outbreak and also institute measures to stop the spread, further warning against consumption of meat whose source is not known.
